Ph.D. position in Power Electronics at KTH, Sweden

KTH School of Electrical Engineering seeks one Ph.D. candidate in Power Electronics
KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are approximately 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education on the highest international level in Electric Power Engineering, Fusion and Space Plasma Physics, Telecommunications, and Networks, Information and Control Systems (NICS).
The scientific and technical activities of the Laboratory of Electrical Machines and Power Electronics can be divided into three areas: Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, and Electric Traction.

Research SubjectProject title: Grid-connected Multilevel Converters based on Cascaded Bridges
Join us in creating the sustainable energy systems of the future by doing research in a hot field within Power Electronics. KTH School of Electrical Engineering announces one Ph.D. student position in Power Electronics for the project `Grid-connected Multilevel Converters based on Cascaded Bridge´.

The goal of the project is to obtain knowledge on how grid-connected multilevel converters based on cascaded bridges shall be designed and dimensioned for three different applications: High-Voltage Direct Current Transmission, Static Compensators, and Supplies for Electric Traction Systems. Comparisons to existing technologies should be performed and specifically strategies for fault handling shall be analyzed.
The investigation is performed by means of analytical considerations, numerical simulations, and experiments on an already existing laboratory prototype.
Converters based on cascaded bridges have become the most interesting converters for transmission applications since they combine a high efficiency (>99%) with an outstanding output voltage waveform. Siemens and Areva have already introduced products based on this technology (HVDC plus, M2C, etc). Banverket has ordered traction supply systems based on the same technology, but with a special topology of the main circuit. Nevertheless, this fieldhas to be judged as being in a state relative virginity, and at least 6 research groups have identified the subject as highly interesting.

The results from the project should be of highest interest for both Swedish manufacturing industry within the field and for users of the technology, as for instance transmission system owners and traction supply system owners.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a completed academic degree on the master’s level in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or a related field. Furthermore, good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Employment
Form of employment: Time limited.Start date: According to agreement.The salary follows the directions provided by KTH, and the position will include 80% research and 20% teaching assistance.
