135 PhD scholarship in Hongkong

Background

Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions.


Eligibility
Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight institutions, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Institute of Education
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
The University of Hong Kong

Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

How to Apply:

Eligible candidates should make an initial application online through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) Electronic System to obtain a HKPFS reference number by 1 December 2010 at Hong Kong Time 12:00:00 (GMT +8 hours) before submitting applications for PhD admission to their chosen institutions.

Applicants may choose up to two programmes / departments at one or two institutions for PhD study under HKPFS 2011/12. They should therefore comply with the admission requirements of their selected institutions and programmes.

As the deadlines for applications to some of the institutions immediately follow that of the initial application, candidates should submit initial applications as early as possible to ensure that they have sufficient time to submit applications to institutions.


Fellowship Award

The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year to each awardee for a period of three years. About 135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in each academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions. * Institutions in Hong Kong normally start their academic year in September.


Selection Panel
Shortlisted applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by one of the following two Selection Panels comprising experts in the relevant board areas:

sciences, medicine, engineering and technology
humanities, social sciences and business studies


Selection Criteria
While candidates' academic excellence is the primary consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account factors as follows:

Academic excellence;
Research ability and potential;

PhD Position in Embedded System Design at TUM, Germany

Domain: Automation We are now accepting applications for a 3‐year PhD Scholarship in the area of software engineering, fault-tolerant systems, and verification in the Department of Informatics at TU München, Germany.

Project Title: Development of High-Availability Embedded Systems Application

In cooperation with GE, TU München investigates on the development process of high-availability embedded systems. The project covers the following aspects: code reuse, multi-core platforms, code generation, and formal verification. Within the project, a windmill application will be implemented as use case. Applicants should have a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent, from a well‐known University).
The success-ful candidate should have experience in one or more of the following areas:
  1. software engineering
  2. multi-core systems
  3. formal methods, and
  4. fault-tolerance mechanisms.

EPEC Electric Power Engineering Centre Postgraduate Scholarship, Newzealand

This scholarship was established in 2004 by the Power Engineering Excellence Trust (PEET) in recognition of academic achievement by postgraduate students specialising in Electric Power Engineering.
Up to two scholarships may be offered annually, to NZ citizen or permanent resident, enrolled at Master's or PhD level and undertaking research in electric power engineering.

Value: $12,500, at Master's level and $25,000 at PhD level

Tenure: Master's: 1 year, PhD: Up to three years subject to availability of funding and satisfactory progress of the scholar.

Closing Date : Enrolment and undertaking research in electric power engineering for a degree at Master's or PhD level at the University of Canterbury shall be deemed to constitute an application for this award. No separate application is necessary.

The neXt Generation multimedia technology (XGMT) group at the Open University in collaboration with the Optical Information Systems group at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Berlin are offering two jointly-funded, 3-year full-time PhD studentships commencing in October 2010. The general research topics will be in multi-sensor navigation for mobile robots and 3-D medical imaging. In particular: 1) the investigation of techniques for the fast derivation of high-quality depth information from optical sensors data and subsequent 3-D mapping to facilitate up-to-date spatial environment maps; and 2) the fusion of different medical image modalities i.e. CAT and MRI to accurately estimate the orientation of the human body by observation of surfaces without access to fixed orientation points. All applicants must either have or expect to gain a good Honours degree (at least a 2i standard or equivalent) in Information Communications Technology, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related area. Both PhD studentships will provide a stipend and cover all fees and are available to any suitably qualified UK, EU and International student.Closing date: 31 March 2010, although the studentships will remain open until filled.

2 PhD Scholarship in Health Care Informatics at NTNU, Norway

The positions are offered by the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDI), affiliated with the Norwegian Centre for Electronic Patient Records (NSEP), both at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). NSEP is organised under the Medical Faculty to develop and maintain interdisciplinary research related to health informatics.
Improved use and re-use of health information for patient empowerment, quality improvement and clinical decision support.

A major part of healthcare resources goes into producing digital, textual, heterogeneous, distributed information stored in electronic health records (EHR). This information is primarily used to give care to individuals. Domain complexity and lack of semantics makes this information hard to structure, abstract and analyse. Secondary usage of information to improve quality, effectiveness and patient empowerment is challenging, but required. The fellows will work in projects with the objective to study, develop and evaluate methods for interpreting, analysing, aggregating and presenting record information. A background and interest within data- and text mining, knowledge technology, information analysis, natural language processing, computational linguistics and/or visualisation is required.

Ph.D. position in Power Electronics at KTH, Sweden

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are approximately 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education on the highest international level in Electric Power Engineering, Fusion and Space Plasma Physics, Telecommunications, and Networks, Information and Control Systems (NICS).
The scientific and technical activities of the Laboratory of Electrical Machines and Power Electronics can be divided into three areas: Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, and Electric Traction.

Research SubjectProject title: Grid-connected Multilevel Converters based on Cascaded Bridges
Join us in creating the sustainable energy systems of the future by doing research in a hot field within Power Electronics. KTH School of Electrical Engineering announces one Ph.D. student position in Power Electronics for the project `Grid-connected Multilevel Converters based on Cascaded Bridge´.

The goal of the project is to obtain knowledge on how grid-connected multilevel converters based on cascaded bridges shall be designed and dimensioned for three different applications: High-Voltage Direct Current Transmission, Static Compensators, and Supplies for Electric Traction Systems. Comparisons to existing technologies should be performed and specifically strategies for fault handling shall be analyzed.
The investigation is performed by means of analytical considerations, numerical simulations, and experiments on an already existing laboratory prototype.
Converters based on cascaded bridges have become the most interesting converters for transmission applications since they combine a high efficiency (>99%) with an outstanding output voltage waveform. Siemens and Areva have already introduced products based on this technology (HVDC plus, M2C, etc). Banverket has ordered traction supply systems based on the same technology, but with a special topology of the main circuit. Nevertheless, this fieldhas to be judged as being in a state relative virginity, and at least 6 research groups have identified the subject as highly interesting.

The results from the project should be of highest interest for both Swedish manufacturing industry within the field and for users of the technology, as for instance transmission system owners and traction supply system owners.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a completed academic degree on the master’s level in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or a related field. Furthermore, good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
