[Japan Scholarship]: 5 Year PhD Program Scholarship in NIG, Japan

Application Deadline: 13th December 2010.

National Institute of Genetics (NIG) offers an international graduate program. This is a 5 year PhD program in life sciences conducted by the Department of Genetics, SOKENDAI , for B.Sc/B.Tech. or M.Sc./M.Tech. holders. Education and research is conducted largely in English. Knowledge of Japanese can be helpful, but is not required.

NIG has 36 labs, studying a variety of topics in life sciences, including molecular and cell biology, developmental biology, plant biology, neurobiology, population biology and evolution, structural biology, genome biology and bioinformatics. Faculty listing can be found at the following URL:
http://www.nig.ac.jp/section/research-e.html

During the first 6 months of the first year, students admitted to the NIG international graduate program will be exposed to independent research in three laboratories (laboratory rotations). Students are expected use this opportunity to choose their thesis advisors.

Students admitted to the International Graduate Program will receive competitive financial support, for example by the stipend from the Japanese government. Details of eligibility can be found in application guidelines. Other financial aid is also available.

People interested in applying should send application documents by December 13, 2010. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for the General Test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing) are required and applicants should register for this exam well in advance of the application deadline (scores must be received by December 31, 2010). In addition, applicants will be asked to take an NIG written exam (via email). The written exam consists of two parts, an English exam and a mini report. The mini-report is designed to test analytical ability rather than background or knowledge; no particular preparation should be necessary. Candidates selected for internet interviews will be notified by January 24th, 2011 and the interviews will be conducted on January 31st (reserve date February 2nd). Successful candidates will be contacted by the middle of February. Enrollment is October, 2011.

2 PhD-Positions in the Field of Physics/Biotechnology at University of Heidelberg, Germany

Application Deadline: 01/02/2010

The ViroQuant-CellNetworks RNAi Screening Facility is looking for motivated students who are interested in highly interdisciplinar research programs. We currently offer 2 PhD-Positions in the field of Physics / Biotechnology / Biology at the BioQuant-Centre for the

"Development of an automated high-throughput / high-content microscopy platform"

Background: To understand complex biological systems quantitatively, newest technologies ranging from biology, physics and informatics to mathematics are nowadays applied within large research and development programs. Within the framework of the BMBF research initiative SysTec "New Methods in Systems Biology" as well as the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg Initiative "New Methods in Live Sciences" we offer two PhD positions for physicists, computer scientists, biotechnologists and biologists.

Goal: The PhD positions comprise the development of basic elements of a high-throughput / high-content microscopy platform for automated genome wide screens up to newest highest resolution procedures. Essential for this is a highly perfected automated connection between different imaging methods (correlative microscopy) to obtain a maximal information benefit from genome wide biological experiments. This will be realised in close interdisciplinary collaborations with expert groups from the fields of molecular biology, image processing and microscopy as well as industrial partners.

Requirements: Candidates should offer strong interest in highly interdisciplinary orientated research projects. Furthermore, interest in microscopy and programming is of highest priority.

How to Apply:

Please apply by sending your application, including your CV and a brief statement of interest, to holger.erfle(at)bioquant.uni-heidelberg.de and juergen.reymann(at)bioquant.uni-heidelberg.de
